Disciples’ Relation to Each Other

¹² “This is ^(A)My commandment, that you love one another, just as I have loved you.

Jesus before the Priests

^12 (A)So ^(B)the Roman ^[a]cohort, the ^[b]commander, and the ^(C)officers of the Jews arrested Jesus and bound Him,

³⁸ Pilate *said to Him, “What is truth?”

And after saying this, he ^(A)came out again to the Jews and *said to them, “^(B)I find no grounds at all for charges in ^[a]His case.

The Crown of Thorns

19 So Pilate then took Jesus and ^[a](A)had Him flogged. ^2 (B)And the soldiers twisted together a crown of thorns and placed it on His head, and put a purple ^[b]cloak on Him; ³ and they repeatedly came up to Him and said, “^(C)Hail, King of the Jews!” and ^(D)slapped Him in the face again and again. ⁴ And then Pilate ^(E)came out again and *said to them, “See, I am bringing Him out to you so that you will know that ^(F)I find no grounds at all for charges in ^[c]His case.” ⁵ Jesus then came out, ^(G)wearing the crown of thorns and the purple robe. And Pilate *said to them, “Behold, the Man!” ⁶ So when the chief priests and the ^(H)officers saw Him, they shouted, saying, “Crucify, crucify!” Pilate *said to them, “Take Him yourselves and crucify Him; for ^(I)I find no grounds for charges in ^[d]His case!” ⁷ The Jews answered him, “^(J)We have a law, and by that law He ought to die, because He ^(K)made Himself out to be the Son of God!”

⁸ Therefore when Pilate heard this statement, he was even more afraid;

² So she *ran and *came to Simon Peter and to the other ^(A)disciple whom Jesus loved, and *said to them, “^(B)They have taken the Lord from the tomb, and we do not know where they have put Him.” ^3 (C)So Peter and the other disciple left, and they were going to the tomb. ⁴ The two were running together; and the other disciple ran ahead, faster than Peter, and came to the tomb first; ⁵ and he ^(D)stooped to look in, and *saw the ^(E)linen wrappings lying there; however he did not go in. ⁶ So Simon Peter also *came, following him, and he entered the tomb; and he *looked at the linen wrappings lying there, ⁷ and ^(F)the face-cloth which had been on His head, not lying with the ^(G)linen wrappings but folded up in a place by itself. ⁸ So the other disciple who ^(H)had first come to the tomb also entered then, and he saw and believed. ⁹ For ^(I)they did not yet understand the Scripture, ^(J)that He must rise from the dead. ¹⁰ So the disciples went away again ^(K)to their own homes.

²⁴ But ^(A)Thomas, one of ^(B)the twelve, who was called ^[a](C)Didymus, was not with them when Jesus came. ²⁵ So the other disciples were saying to him, “We have seen the Lord!” But he said to them, “Unless I see in ^(D)His hands the imprint of the nails, and put my finger into the place of the nails, and put my hand into His side, ^(E)I will not believe.”

^26 [b]Eight days later His disciples were again inside, and Thomas was with them. Jesus *came, the doors having been ^[c]shut, and stood in their midst and said, “^(F)Peace be to you.” ²⁷ Then He *said to Thomas, “^(G)Place your finger here, and see My hands; and take your hand and put it into My side; and do not continue in disbelief, but be a believer.” ²⁸ Thomas answered and said to Him, “My Lord and my God!” ²⁹ Jesus *said to him, “Because you have seen Me, have you now believed? ^(H)Blessed are they who did not see, and yet believed.”

Why This Gospel Was Written

^30 (I)So then, many other ^[d](J)signs Jesus also performed in the presence of the disciples, which are not written in this book; ³¹ but these have been written ^(K)so that you may believe that Jesus is the ^[e]Christ, ^(L)the Son of God; and that by ^(M)believing you may have life in His name.

²³ for all ^[a](A)have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,
